Does the Whale’s Magnitude Diminish?

Anne Wicke

Résumé :
The contemporary reviews of Melville’s works often stressed — as a reproach — the bulkiness and heterogeneity of most of his volumes, which invites us to question the notions of genre and format — the form and the organization —of Melville’s works, as well as the relation set Up by Melville with that notion of format, the representation and the symbolisation of this relation, that I choose here to see as a symptoni of the relation to the limit, to the frame, presenting a kinship with some romantic postures.
