The style of the French baroque novel has been often blamed for its frequent use of metaphors. This critic doesn’t take into account the ancient conception of fiction, defined, according to Scaliger, as a mixture of true story and rhetoric artifices. The baroque novel follows this definition, displaying an ostensibly ornate prose which tends to confuse both literal and figural poles of the discourse. The metaphor plays an important role in this process. Involving in the text as an image, its treatment is very close to the very descriptive treatment of the action. Therefore the metaphor activates a set of similarity and variation with the literal narration, enriching the meaning and pragmatic effects of the novelistic discourse.

La prose du roman baroque a souvent été critiquée pour son emploi, jugé excessif, des figures de rhétorique et en particulier des métaphores. L’élaboration d’un style figuré constitue pourtant un trait structurant de la poétique romanesque à une époque où prime une conception rhétorique de la fiction. L’étude stylistique de l’intégration de la métaphore dans son cotexte fictionnel met en outre en évidence un jeu de permutation et de variation entre les pôles littéral et figuré de celui-ci, qui en enrichit la signification et l’effet pragmatique.
