In conjoint mother–infant music therapy within parent–infant psychiatry, the concepts of synchronization and empathy continually overlap, intersect, diverge, and differentiate across clinical situations. Drawing on observations from several clinical settings, together with a substantial body of scholarship in child psychiatry, this article examines these two concepts across theoretical frameworks that are often distinct— and at times even opposed—yet become especially fruitful when brought into dialogue. This perspective helps illuminate the complexity of both clinical care and clinical reflection, with the specific aim of supporting the developing mother–infant bond. More specifically, it involves helping a mother build a relationship with her infant while recognizing the baby’s singularity and the reciprocal process through which that relationship gradually takes shape. The clinical vignette presented here gave rise to this reflection. It focuses on the relationship among a young child, her mother, and the music therapist, while also attending to the singularity of each participant within the group, including the other dyads and professionals involved.

Dans le cadre de prises en charge en musicothérapie à caractère groupal et conjoint au sein d'une unité de pédopsychiatrie périnatale, les deux termes « synchronisation et empathie » n'ont de cesse de se croiser, se rencontrer, s'entrechoquer, se séparer, se différencier, quelles que soient les situations cliniques rencontrées. Jongler et jouer avec différents outils théorico-cliniques soutenant le travail en périnatalité est un vaste et constructif chantier. Faire dialoguer entre eux des concepts aux champs théoriques très souvent opposés, tout en soulignant leurs points de convergence, permet ici à la musicothérapeute de ne pas tomber dans l'écueil de ses propres résistances. Il s'agit présentement d'ouvrir le champ des possibles de sa propre pensée, avec pour unique objectif l'accompagnement du lien mère-bébé, à savoir : aider les mamans à faire connaissance avec leur bébé dans leur singularité et les accompagner dans la relation qu'elles vont construire avec lui, et réciproquement. La situation clinique présentée en troisième partie illustre l'origine de cette réflexion, prenant en compte la relation entre une petite fille, sa maman et la musicothérapeute, sans omettre la singularité de chacun(e) des participant(e)s au groupe (autres dyades et professionnelles).
