Throughout this study, we studied French speaking individuals living in Saskatchewan, province located in the western part of Canada, and their discourse on questions of self- identity. With a sociolinguistic’s perspective, we analyzed the speech and linguistic practices of these individuals to see if they were in concordance with how they identify themselves. In the early 1900s, a wave of French speaking immigrants from Quebec, Ontario but also from Europe and the United States came to settle in western Canada. Based on interviews conducted with French speaking individuals living in Saskatchewan– all migrants or children of migrants – we were able to conclude that many still identify themselves according to the recent immigration experience. However, apart from militant opinions from certain individuals, there is little convergence between one’s identity and one’s linguistic practices.

À travers cette étude, nous examinons les discours d’appartenance d’individus francophones habitant la Saskatchewan, province située à l’Ouest du Canada. Dans une perspective sociolinguistique, nous nous interrogeons sur la cohérence entre le discours d’un individu et ses usages linguistiques. Au début des années 1900, une vague d’immigrants provenant du Québec, de l’Ontario mais aussi de l’Europe et des Etats-Unis se sont installés dans l’Ouest canadien.À partir d’entrevues menées auprès d’individus francophones de la Saskatchewan, tous migrants ou enfants de migrants, nous montrons que les locuteurs s’identifient encore fortement à l’expérience migratoire récente.Toutefois, mis à part le discours militant de locuteurs, il y a peu de convergence entre le discours sur soi et les usages linguistiques.
