This article examines the gendered construction of sacrifice in al-Serr al-Madfûn [The Buried Secret] (Ali Ghafari, 2015), a Lebanese film associated with the Islamic resistance cinema and centred on the combatant Amer Kalakech and his mother, Insaf Achour. Drawing on a qualitative approach combining intersectional analysis, film analysis, and socio-political and historical contextualisation, the study explores how the martyr is made familiar, intelligible, and legitimate through his embedding in familial, religious, territorial, and political relations. The analysis shows that this humanisation does not break with heroic and sacrificial logics; rather, it reshapes the conditions through which adherence to the martyr figure is produced. Amer is constructed through a form of combatant masculinity grounded in faith, determination, and sacrifice, yet this masculinity cannot be understood independently of Insaf’s maternal trajectory. She supports, accepts, blesses, conceals, and ultimately transmits her son’s sacrifice. Motherhood thus becomes a moral and political resource within a gendered division in which combatant masculinity and sacrificial femininity mutually reinforce one another. The article conceptualises this articulation as a “gendered economy of sacrifice”, in which gender, religious affiliation, generation, territorial location, and partisan commitment intersect. The film therefore does more than represent martyrdom: through its narrative, visual, and memorial choices, it contributes to shaping the conditions under which sacrifice becomes conceivable, socially valued, and transmissible.
