A smart city, as defined by the British Standards Institute, integrates "physical, digital and human systems in the built environment to deliver a sustainable, prosperous and inclusive future for its citizens" 1 . When a city takes measures to transform into a smart city, there are many areas where the laws of intellectual property protection are relevant, covering the scope of copyright and industrial property. For example, the entire structure on which smart cities are based is controlled by sophisticated software, system operations, blockchain and artificial intelligence. Therefore, it is important for governments and businesses to establish a comprehensive IP strategy that considers all available forms of IP protection, to minimize the risks associated with operating and managing smart cities. This work analyzes provisions for the protection of intellectual property in the process of transforming cities into smart cities as well as in the context of their ongoing functioning.
