Abstract :

International audience

While contemporary architectural issues focus on urban and terrestrial housing, living on or in water is a special experience, at least for humans. The ocean may at first seem like a place that cannot be lived in, but environmental humanities make it an ontological one. Living in/on the Ocean has become mandatory for the inhabitants of Lower Manhattan in Kim Stanley Robinson’s New York 2140 (2017), following a double rise of water level during the 21st century that submerged the southern part of the city, and an escape for the Noahs, victims of the deadly military imperialism of the Earthlings in Hugo Verlomme’s Mermere (2020), whose plot is set in an undated future. In fact, we’ll be examining the ways in which the ocean can be “inhabited” in the Anthropocene era, whether it is the ecotone interweaving land and ocean that New York has become, or the oceanic ecotopia of Mermere.

Si les problématiques contemporaines de l’architecture insistent sur l’habitation urbaine et terrestre, habiter sur ou dans l’eau est une expérience particulière en tout cas pour les humains. L’océan apparaît comme un lieu a priori inhabitable, mais les humanités environnementales en font un lieu ontologique. Habiter l’Océan est devenu une nécessité pour les habitants de Lower Manhattan dans New York 2140 (2017) de Kim Stanley Robinson à la suite d’une double montée des eaux au cours du XXIe siècle qui a submergé la partie sud de la ville, une échappatoire pour les Noés victimes de l’impérialisme militaire et mortifère des Terriens dans Mermere (2020) d’Hugo Verlomme dont l’intrigue est située dans un avenir non daté. De fait, nous examinerons les modalités d’un « habiter » l’océan à l’ère de l’Anthropocène, qu’il s’agisse de l’écotone entremêlant terre et océan qu’est devenu New York ou de l’écotopie océanique de Mermere.
